In the spring of 2003 COWI was awarded the Norad-funded project “Burell Water Supply and Sanitation Rehabilitation” in Albania.
Burrel is a town in Mat District in Central Albania with a population of 20,000 inhabitants. This is a three-year project (with likely extension) where the Ministry of Teritorry Adjustment and Tourism (MoTAT); the Client; intends to rehabilitate the water and sanitation systems in the Burrel Municipality; which includes the town and seven villages. To effectively execute this Project, COWI have established offices in Tirana and in Burrel together with local Sub Consultants.
During the summer of 2004, COWI have also won the WB funded-contract for the “Independent Performance Reviewer” as a part of the Albania Municipal Water and Wastewater Project. This Project involves a review of the perfomance of the Operator (Berlin Wasser) in their efforts to run the water and wastewater systems of four large Albanian cities (the Municipalities of Durres, Fier, Lezhe and Saranda).
Through these two contracts COWI will be represented in Albania the next 5 years and have a continuous focus on expanding their activities not only in Albania, but also in the Balkan region.
